The concept of a personal identity called ‘me’ is an illusion. It seems to be a body-mind-identity but it is really a collection of conditioning [a dream], projected on the screen of Consciousness. When this phantom departs the physical dream-shell within this Grand Dream it returns to the full accumulated conditioning of all its previous lives [dream lives] referred to as a soul. It is NOT somehow ‘wise or pure’ because it is now without a physical body. It is still a phantom that wraps around the ONE SELF causing it to slumber to ITs True Reality.
Many speak of a higher and lower self together with this concept of a soul. All manner of separate entities then ‘seem’ to guide it such as departed family members, angels, masters, ET’s and many others that appear to validate the illusion of separation. Nevertheless, ‘if’ an inner voice is heard whose guidance ultimately leads to a benign outcome, rest assured that no matter what ‘disguise’ it wears [based on your beliefs] IT is ‘always’ the ONE SELF.
